Red light therapy seems to be EVERYWHERE right now.

Everyone is talking about it in the holistic wellness space. What is so great about it? Are its "benefits" backed by science? And if they ARE that great, where do you get an at-home device that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Join us as we breakdown RED LIGHT THERAPY:

red light therapy benefits

"Red light reduces the production of unnecessary cytokines (aka proteins) which are naturally inflammatory and signal the immune system to over-respond."

The Science Behind Red Light Therapy

We don't want to get too complicated regarding the science behind red light therapy, but it is pretty cool so bare with us!

Another name for red light therapy is low-level laser therapy, which is exposure to red and/or near-infrared light. When you're exposed to this light it impacts you on a cellular level, all the way down to the mitochondria- if you remember from your school biology lessons, that is the "powerhouse of the cell" (aka your cell's main source of energy).

Stimulating your cell's mitochondria with red light increases the production of adenosine triphosphate- you might remember it as ATP.

ATP is the energy currency of your cells. Increasing the production of ATP will increase your cells energy production allowing for improved response and better vitality.

Red light therapy has also been shown to promote cellular repair and regeneration by facilitating the creation DNA & RNA.

DNA and RNA are essential components of cellular structure and function. Therefore, when red light therapy promotes the creation of DNA and RNA, it contributes to the overall health of cells, which helps with healing inside the body.

Red light therapy also has MAJOR anti-inflammatory effects! Red light reduces the production of unnecessary cytokines (aka proteins) which are naturally inflammatory and signal the immune system to over-respond.

Let's go back to how RLT (red light therapy) increases the production of ATP. The increased ATP production leads to several physiological responses, many of which contribute to improved blood flow. One of these responses is vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. This helps promote blood flow through oxygenation, which is when more oxygen-rich blood reaches the tissues. This process supports tissue repair and regeneration because oxygen is crucial for cellular metabolism and energy production.

The Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Skin, Pain, and Hair Growth

Red light is great for skincare use because it stimulates collagen production. An increase of collagen will reduce fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin texture and tone. Additionally, because red light therapy helps with reducing inflammation, it's a great choice for conditions like acne and rosacea.

Again, because of the anti inflammatory benefits, this at home treatment can help with pain relief by alleviating discomfort through improved circulation. A lot of people experience relief from arthritis, muscle soreness, and joint pain.

"The non-invasive nature & minimal side effects make red light therapy a versatile and effective option for many concerns."

Did you know red light therapy stimulates hair follicles? This, along with improves circulation, promotes thicker, fuller hair growth and can even reverse hair loss in men and women! The non-invasive nature & minimal side effects make red light therapy a versatile and effective option for many concerns.

How to Use Red Light Therapy Devices:

Using RLT is pretty straight forward. Here are some basic guidelines whether you choose a handheld device, mask, or stand up panel:

Prep Like a Pro : If you're focussing on skincare, start by cleaning your face.

Set the Scene : Find your cozy spot - dim the lights and cue up your favorite tunes. We also take this time to read a book.

Zap Away : Hit the 'on' button and let the red light therapy do its thing.

Guard Your Eyes : Avoid staring directly into the light! Staring directly into any bright light can be harmful for your eyes.

Chill Time : Kick back, relax, and let the red light therapy work its magic. It's like a mini spa day, but in the comfort of your own home. Consider 5-20 minute sessions.

Repeat : Keep the red light therapy love going by making it a regular part of your self-care routine. Consistency is key!

How Much Does a Red Light Cost?

Red light therapy devices often have a higher price due to the advanced technology and quality standards they incorporate. These devices go through rigorous testing and certification processes to ensure their efficacy and safety. Reputable brands invest in research and development WHICH IS IMPORTANT!

Generally, quality red light therapy devices range from $100 to $500 for smaller, handheld or panel-style devices suitable for home use. Larger, professional-grade panels or systems can cost anywhere from $500 to $3000 or more.

Most people don't need a $3000 red light. You can find a high quality, certified red light for around $400.  We understand this is an investment but we also stand by the fact that this is an investment worth having!

*PLEASE DO NOT BE TEMPTED BY CHEAPER, D.I.Y. ALTERNATIVES!! Chicken coop lights and red light bulbs have not been tested for effectiveness and safety. There's no way to know whether using these lights are a total waste of time (due to ineffectiveness) or harmful.*

What Red Light Therapy Device is the Best For at Home Use?

LumeBox 2.0 Handheld Red Light

Lumbox is great because it's portable and travel friendly but WAY BIGGER than most handheld red light therapy devices. It has a 6 and 12 minute timer and includes protective eyewear. You also have the option to buy their stand separately to make this a hands-free device but we find that you can lean it up against a wall to get the hands-free benefits without spending extra money. We love the versatility of LumeBox!

Omnilux Contour Face - Red Light Mask

Omnilux specializes in red light for skincare. They suggest three to five, 10-minute treatments per week using their mask. The device is made of flexible silicone so it easily forms to your face. Omnilux devices have been specifically profiled in over 40 independent peer-reviewed published clinical studies. We love the idea of targeted face treatment, but prefer the versatility of handheld and panel lights.

Vital PRO - Red Light Panel

The Vital Red Light PRO Panel will get you the most bang for your buck when it comes to a generously sized, standing light. It comes with eye protection, has a 10 minute timer, and has two high speed, quiet fans for effective cooling. We love this option as a "home base" red light but it's not as travel friendly as other options.
